Fano, city of Fortune, so-named after its famous temple (Fanum Fortunae), is also the city of Augustus, as can be seen from the monumental arch built in his honour (Arch of Augustus) and the city walls built to protect the “colony” founded by this first Roman emperor. As the centuries passed Fano became a medieval city with a Romanesque cathedral and an imposing Palazzo del Podestà.
Later, the Malatesta family erected the Castle and the charming square where concerts and shows are held. The main square is the setting of the neoclassicaI Teatro della Fortuna with the magnificent hall by Luigi Poletti. Then there is the sea with its important and picturesque fishing port and the eighteen-kilometer stretch of beach. To the west, the hinterland is characterized by vineyards and olive groves and by the presence of Flaminia consular road, an old Roman road which has provided a direct link with Rome for almost two thousand years.
