The marriage of text and music: effective compositional techniques. This workshop will provide many additional and effective techniques in choral composition and arranging, no matter one's current expertise. The lecturer will present many examples during the workshop and relate them to the various styles and involvement of the participants. This session will increase the creativity and productivity of each participant.
In this workshop, all useful elements for making a vocal pop and jazz arrangement will be looked into. From a technical point of view, aspects such as vocal chords and the use of harmony and rhythm will be studied, as well as a consideration of the important and often overlooked element of the form. A special attention will be given to what works and what doesn’t with choirs of different levels. Arrangements will be analyzed from their conception: what is the starting point, how to choose a style (or mixture of styles) for a single composition.
In this workshop we will move into the exciting world of music for children's and youth choirs, as well as female formations. We will see how to choose a text, check rhythmic, melodic and harmonic possibilities, and characteristics of the voices in these age groups, tips on making a work interesting without adding difficulty, body tools and staging built into the score.
It´s an active and practical workshop waiting to be discovered with a lecturer appreciated all around Europe.
The participants, accordingly to their workshops, will be involved in this additional workshop where they can experiment. It will be divided in two groups working respectively with the Arcova Vocal Ensemble (mixed choir) and with the Canto Leggero choir (children’s choir). In this workshop the two choirs-in-residence will study and perform the pieces composed by the participants of the three workshops on composition. The main goal will be to reflect all together on the delicate passage from score to performance, exploring technical questions, alternative solutions and possible modifications to the scores following the effective sound production.
The presence of two workshop choirs for the entire week is a plus of this training proposal and a rare opportunity for immediate interaction between composer, conductor and choir.
